Learning is the only exit from the insanity of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!
But how much learning is enough?
Too little on a topic can result in suffering the Dunning-Kruger effect. It may take much deeper exploration, plus real-life use, application, and iteration, to achieve the desired changes and results.
Bite-size LinkedIn and blog posts may be sufficient for small tips like, “Make your mouse larger and more visible for your demos.”
On the other hand, learning to be truly empathetic won’t happen simply by being told to do so! It may take extended exploration of others’ experiences through reading, listening to recordings, and real-life interactions to achieve this particular goal.
In between are skills like learning how to open a discovery conversation. Tips such as “establish rapport,” while pointing people in the right direction (perhaps), are nearly useless in accomplishing the desired results. They may, in fact, backfire in many situations!
These kinds of skills require more extensive study, drawing from detailed articles, books, and workshops, combined with real-life practice and coaching.
Gather what you can from tips and similar bite-size offerings, but be cautious about their efficacy. When you really want to learn a more complicated skill (or an integrated set of skills), be prepared to invest: It’s an important investment in your future that will yield multiples in rewards!
Here are some resources to draw from, ranging from simple tips in blog posts, to deeper explorations in articles, webinars, and podcasts, to books that examine topics in great depth:
