Browser Full Screen Mode: A Really Simple, Really Effective Demo Best Practice

I can’t tell you how many folks presenting demos forget (or don’t know) to enter full screen mode for browser-accessed applications. Instead of viewing only their software, we see their open tabs, bookmarks, and toolbar in their browser and the applications on their Macintosh Dock or Windows Taskbar.

Operating this way has (at least!) three disadvantages:

1. 15-25% of your screen is wasted.
2. Your audience is distracted reading these tabs, bookmarks, toolbars, and apps.
3. It makes your application look more complicated.

So, try this experiment by yourself or with a colleague:

1. Start an example demo in your browser as you normally would and see what things look like.
2. Now, turn off your Bookmarks Bar, your Toolbar, and enter Full Screen mode.
3. Compare!

Notice:

1. You display more of your application.
2. You aren’t distracted.
3. It looks less complicated!
